The Great Exchange consists of exchanging something that The Poor Souls want that we can offer them, for something we want that The Poor Souls have.
What The Poor Souls want is some relief from their sufferings and God wants to give it to them. What we want is to be Holier. To be Holier we need to be more like The Saints.
It just so happens that the two greatest sufferings for The Poor Souls are:
- Longing for GOD.
- Sorrow for their sins.
And the two greatest signs of Holiness in The Saints are:
- Longing for GOD.
- Sorrow for their sins.
So we ask God in prayer to transfer (exchange) some of the suffering (longing for God and sorrow for sins) from The Poor Souls to us. As a result:
- The Poor Souls get some relief from their Suffering.
- We in exchange receive these sufferings that will help us to get closer to Holiness.

“Lord, You see how terribly the souls in Purgatory suffer from their longing for You and from their intense sorrow for their sins. Well, then, in Your mercy, I ask You to give them some relief by transferring to my heart their longing for You and their sorrow for sins, Let my heart burn with longing for You, my God, and please give me a d deep contrition for my sins! Amen.” - Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska (Page, X)
